Nguyen Tuan Kiet’s 12-player equation: Vietnam women’s volleyball enters Asiad 20 with a cracking link

Asiad 20, the 20th Asian Games taking place in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan from September 19 to October 4, 2026, allows Vietnam’s women’s volleyball team to register only 12 players. The 2026 Asian Championship, just concluded in China, allowed 14. Two roster slots may sound small, but for a team that has just lost two key outside hitters, that is the first structural gap I see. The Asian Championship exposed the problem. Vietnam entered with four outside hitters, including two teenagers: Pham Quynh Huong, 18, and Bui Thi Anh Thao, 17. Vi Thi Nhu Quynh was absent for health reasons. Nguyen Thi Uyen suffered a serious injury during the tournament. Head coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet was left with three outside hitters, two of whom are too young to carry a major multi-sport event. Vietnam’s system relies on quality reception. Uyen anchored the first pass; Nhu Quynh shared the attacking load with Tran Thi Thanh Thuy. Without both, the team risks becoming a single-point attack. Opponents such as China, Japan and Thailand will read the offense more easily and target the reception zone with strong serves. The real issue is the 12-player limit. Vietnam must cut a player despite the shortage. If 11 names are nearly fixed, the coach has only one slot left to patch the outside-hitter position. Among domestic candidates, Dinh Thi Thuy of LPBank Ninh Binh was mentioned most often but lacked impact at the AVC Cup. Nguyen Thi Phuong and Pham Thi Nguyet Anh have shown flashes but lack consistency. Hoang Hong Hanh, Tran Tu Linh and Do Lai Yen Nhi are still in contention. The counter-intuitive point: choosing the best domestic scorer is not necessarily the right answer. Vietnam needs a player who can receive and defend, not another attacker who depends on perfect first touch. The two young outside hitters should not be forced into primary scoring roles. They can help defensively. I am not predicting Vietnam’s result at Asiad 20. I will watch how the team handles serves when Thanh Thuy is targeted. The answer lies in the 12th roster spot. When that name is announced, I will not ask how many points she can score. I will ask how many times she can let Thanh Thuy breathe.
